##Introduction Texcol Plus is a combination medication used for the relief of allergies, hay fever, colds, and other symptoms of allergy. It contains chlorpheniramine which is an antihistamine to reduce symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, and watery eyes; dextromethorphan which is a cough suppressant and decongestant; and pseudoephedrine (HCl) which is a decongestant. ##Uses For Texcol Plus is used to provide relief of allergy, hay fever, and cold symptoms related to the upper respiratory tract, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and nasal congestion. ##Mechanism of Action Chlorpheniramine (Maleate) interferes with the action of histamine, a substance released by mast cells in response to an allergen. It also block the action of acetylcholine, another chemical released in the body due to allergy. Dextromethorphan acts as a cough suppressant by suppressing the reflex of coughing. Pseudoephedrine (HCl), a decongestant, causes the vessels of nasal passages to constrict, thus reducing swelling and congestion. ##How Long Does it Take To Work The relief of symptoms typically begins within an hour after taking Texcol Plus. ##Absorption The components of this medication are all absorbed rapidly in the gastrointestinal tract. ##Route of Elimination Chlorpheniramine (Maleate) and Dextromethorphan are eliminated mainly through the urine, while a small portion of the Pseudoephedrine (HCl) is eliminated through the feces. ##Dosage Texcol Plus is supplied as a tablet containing 4mg of Chlorpheniramine (Maleate), 10mg of Dextromethorphan, and 30mg of Pseudoephedrine (HCl) per adult tablet. Dosage for adult and elderly is one (1) tablet every 4-6 hours as necessary. Maximum dosage for adult and elderly should not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. It is not indicated for use in children. ##Administration Texcol Plus should be taken orally with or without food. ##Side Effects Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, nausea, increased appetite, and stomach upset. ##Toxicity The components of Texcol Plus are each less toxic than other medications of their respective categories. Overdose of the combination may lead to CNS depression, cardiotoxicity, and renal failure. ##Precautions Patients with allergies, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, liver or kidney problems, prostate problems, irregular or abnormally slow heart rate, or difficulty urinating should consult a doctor before taking Texcol Plus. ##Interactions Texcol Plus should not be used with MAO inhibitors, such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, nor should it be taken with alcohol or any other CNS depressant medications. ##Drug Interactions Texcol Plus may interact with certain drugs, such as beta-blockers, anticholinergics, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, insulin or other diabetes medications, and any other medications that may affect the CNS. ##Food Interactions Texcol Plus may interact with food. Patients should avoid drinking alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medication. ##Pregnancy Use Texcol Plus may be used during pregnancy, but only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the fetus. ##Lactation Use Texcol Plus should be used with caution while breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk. ##Acute Overdose Symptoms of acute overdose of Texcol Plus may include drowsiness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, stiff muscles, dry mouth, blurred vision, disorientation, rapid heart rate, rubbish, seizures, and coma. ##Contraindication Texcol Plus is contraindicated in patients with narrow angle glaucoma, diabetes, urinary retention, thyrotoxicosis and severe hypertension, hyperthyroidism, severe coronary artery disease, and in those hypersensitive to the components of this medication. ##Use Direction If more than one adult tablet is prescribed, it should be taken as a single dose or in two divided doses, in the morning and evening.
