Introduction
Terzol is an antifungal medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections (candidiasis). It belongs to a class of drugs known as azole antifungals and work by stopping the growth of certain types of fungi and yeast.
Uses
Terzol is used to treat inflammatory and suppurative processes of the external ear canal, especially those caused by microbial agents, such as Candida (yeast) or Trichomonas vaginalis.
Mechanism of Action
Terzol works by selectively inhibiting the growth of fungi by altering cell-wall biogenesis of susceptible fungi. It binds to fungal cell-wall sterols, thereby disrupting fungal cytoplasmic membranes and eventually leading to cell death.
How Long Does it Take to Work
Terzol usually takes two days to produce results, but it may take up to seven days for the full benefits to be seen. Improvements should be noticed by the third day.
Absorption
Terzol is rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the vagina after topical application. Peak plasma concentrations of Terzol are reached in about 1 hour.
Route of Elimination
Terzol is metabolized in the liver and extensively excreted in the urine and feces.
Dosage
The recommended dose of Terzol is 1 applicatorful (80 mg) intravaginally once daily for 3 days or 4 applicatorfuls (320 mg) intravaginally as a single dose.
Administration
Terzol is to be administered intravaginally only. Ensure to wash your hands before and after each use.
Side Effects
Common side effects associated with Terzol use include genital itching, burning, redness or soreness, swelling, dryness or tenderness of the skin around the vagina, pain during urination, and abnormal or increased vaginal discharge. Talk to your doctor if these side effects become concerning.
Toxicity
There are no known cases of topical overdosage. Acute toxicity is a rare occurrence and is characterized by symptoms such as restlessness, confusion, irritability, depression, tremor, vomiting, tachycardia, and diarrhoea.
Precaution
Terzol is not recommended for patients with severe hepatic impairment or those receiving concurrent treatment with terfenadine, terguride, or cisapride. Tell your doctor about any supplements, vitamins, or other medications that you are taking before receiving Terzol.
