Introduction
2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)ethene is a monoterpene oil obtained from wood and other prohibites of the plant genus Guaiacum which are mainly grown in South-Central America. It is a yellowish oil soluble in ethanol, ether, and chloroform.
Uses
2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)ethene is primarily used to treat conditions of the musculoskeletal system, particularly pain caused by general inflammation, bursitis, rheumatism, and related ailments. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-slippery actions, making it absorbent and healing when applied externally to wounds, cuts, and abrasions. In addition, it can be used as an antiseptic, disinfectant, and insecticide.
Mechanism of Action
2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)ethene interferes with the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, two substances that play a role in the body’s inflammatory response. This then reduces the swelling and affects smooth muscle contraction, helping to alleviate pain.
